Jonny had an early, busy morning while the kids and I slept in. He started the day with a sunrise run alongside Ty and his cross-country athletes, then joined Ty and McKay—Ty’s friend and colleague—for breakfast. In the afternoon we took the kids up the Star Landmark Trail, a short but steep climb to a scenic viewpoint overlooking Afton and Star Valley. The slip-n-slide back at the house was a hit until Kaleo got a bit of soapy water in his eyes. Later, we crossed into Idaho to visit Ty’s dad and brother, Tennyson, at their ranch. They welcomed us warmly, showing off their impressive Clydesdales and sharing fresh strawberries from their garden. While I took the kids back to Ty and Andrea’s for dinner and bedtime, Jonny stayed behind to photograph Ty leading a one-on-one coaching session with Valerie, an accomplished heptathlete. Valerie trained under Ty in high school and has just completed her freshman year at Duke, where she competes on the track team.
